Jewels are tiny synthetic rubies or sapphires. The jewels are designed to minimize friction inside the movement. They serve as bearings to the pivots and wheels; they ensure that the parts move freely and last longer. The number of jewels in a watch tends to keep up with its levels of complication: complex mechanisms require more jewels.

While early watchmakers used natural jewels, the modern process creates synthetic jewels that are every bit as durable and accurate. Jewels play a significant role in mechanical movements, contributing both to precision over time and smooth wear.
